What is Z-Wave Long Range (Z-Wave LR)?
Z-Wave Long Range (Z-Wave LR) is built to significantly extend wireless range. This feature allows for even more Z-Wave devices on a single system — no repeaters needed. Additional benefits include extended battery life, greater overall security and performance, and SmartStart for easy device enrollment. Both the panel and device must be Z-Wave LR-enabled and have 700 or 800 series chips.
Features
- Significantly increased range and reliability
- Extends wireless range beyond the home, allowing peripheral devices such as outdoor lights, smart locks, and gate and garage door controllers to be easily connected
- Supports stronger, more robust networks—no repeaters needed
Note: Z-Wave LR devices will not be included in the Z-Wave Rediscovery. While those nodes will be skipped for mapping purposes, link quality will still be listed for troubleshooting purposes. - Quick and simple device enrollment—scan the QR code to add in seconds with SmartStart
Note: To enable or disable Long Range after an eligible device has been added, the device must be deleted and re-added. - Enhanced security and overall performance
- Longer battery life via dynamic power control
- Enables Z-Wave LR devices to adjust and optimize radio output at each transmission
- Backward compatible with existing Z-Wave networks and devices, allowing both Z-Wave and Z-Wave LR devices on the same network
Note: Panels must have 700 series Z-Wave chip or newer, and SDK version 7.15+. For the list of currently supported devices, see Which panels and devices are compatible with Z-Wave Long Range (Z-Wave LR)?.
