What is Z-Wave beaming?

Beaming is a way to immediately communicate with battery-powered Z-Wave devices. In order to extend battery life, many battery-powered Z-Wave devices, including locks and thermostats, need to spend most of their time in a sleep state with very low power use. Devices that can be communicated to via beaming wake up extremely briefly several times each second to check whether another device wants to send them a message. If one does, they stay awake for a couple of seconds until they've received that message.

To communicate with a battery-powered device, all repeaters between the module/panel and the device in question must be capable of beaming (Z-Wave version 5.0x or later). In early versions of Z-Wave (versions 4.2x and earlier), not all devices could communicate with the battery-powered devices described above.

Most Z-Wave devices currently on the market support communication with beaming devices.
