What is Z-Wave interference?

Interference occurs when the signal from one device affects communication for another device. These devices typically communicate on the same or a very similar frequency. Therefore, when troubleshooting Z-Wave communication issues, look for devices that send signals on the same frequency as Z-Wave (i.e., 908 MHz in the U.S. and Canada).

If a Z-Wave device is experiencing interference or another type of communication trouble, the device may not reliably respond to commands or display the correct status. Common sources of Z-Wave interference

Common devices found to create Z-Wave interference include, but are not limited to:

  • Baby monitors
  • Cordless landline telephones
  • Ham radios
  • Wireless speakers
  • Walkie-talkies (i.e., handheld transceivers)
  • Larger or industrial microwave ovens
  • Large metallic surfaces, like refrigerators or exposed ducts, may reflect Z-Wave signals unexpectedly

Troubleshooting

If there are no normal Z-Wave communication issues (e.g., range, power, device defect, etc.), interference may be a possibility. It may also be possible if several or all devices stop communicating simultaneously.

When troubleshooting Z-Wave interference:
  1. Look for devices known to cause Z-Wave interference.
  2. Use a frequency scanner to search for signals in the 900 MHz range.
  3. Ask if there are any Z-Wave devices that are active but haven't been enrolled to the same Z-Wave network. This does not typically cause interference, but it has been noticed on occasion.

If interference is determined to be the cause of the communication issue, it is recommended to remove the interfering device. If that is not possible, a reorganization of the Z-Wave network layout may help, but it would be difficult to guarantee consistent functionality. Removal of the interfering device is always the best solution.
