Enroll, delete, or reset a Schlage J Series Lock (JBE109 and JFE109)
Z-Wave locks use encrypted communication over Z-Wave, meaning their communication is completely secure. With this added security, the lock and the controller must use additional Z-Wave commands to learn-in and communicate. With each additional command sent, the probability of a communication breakdown increases.
For information about hardware installation, see Schlage J Series Locks (JBE109 and JFE109).
Important: Do not add or delete user codes locally to or from the lock. Only use the Alarm.com app and Alarm.com customer website for user code management.
To mitigate the chances of a learn-in failure for locks, complete the following during installation.
To enroll a Schlage J Series Lock (JBE109 and JFE109) into a Z-Wave network:
As a SmartStart device:
It is recommended to enroll this device as a SmartStart device to eliminate the need to put Z-Wave controllers into Add Mode or to trigger devices (as is the case when enrolling non-SmartStart S2 devices).
For information about SmartStart compatibility and the enrollment process, see Add or remove a Z-Wave SmartStart-enabled device.
As an S2 device:
If your Z-Wave controller is not SmartStart-compatible, it is recommended to enroll this device as an S2 device for enhanced security and encryption features.
For information about this process, see Add an S2-encrypted Z-Wave Device.
As an S0 device:
If the Z-Wave controller is not SmartStart or S2-compatible, this device can be enrolled in the traditional way as an S0 device.
- Place the Z-Wave Controller into the Add Mode. Refer to the respective documentation for your home automation system for details.
- Remove the battery cover.
- Press and hold the enrollment button under the battery cover for 0.5 to 3 seconds as shown. Solid amber LED will be ON.

Enter the 5 digit code shown on the label located on the lock or on the cover of the included installation instructions. Refer to your home automation system’s documentation or app for more information. - Success is indicated by a green LED blink and a beep. If a red LED turns on, try repeating steps 1-3.
