Garage door status appears as Unknown

An Unknown status for garage doors indicates that the device is online but unable to determine the current position of the garage door. This may occur for various reasons, such as a brief power outage while it is changing states.

Note: Garage doors initially display as Unknown when first added to a customer account, and commands to this new device will not function until its status is updated. As a safety requirement, garage doors must be operated locally first to determine the state before they can be controlled remotely through Alarm.com.

To resolve:

To know when a garage door fails to enter a requested status or becomes disabled, set up a System Event notification for A garage door or lock failed to enter requested status and One of my devices is temporarily disabled. For more information about creating this notification, see Create a system event notification

  1. Using the Alarm.com app or Alarm.com customer website, select the desired state of the garage door.
    • The system will make up to two attempts to place the door in the desired state. If commands are still failing, a system event notification is sent if it is set up.

Note: The garage door may open or close once before moving to the desired state.

  2. If the status is still Unknown or the device is disabled, locally place the door in the desired state using the local wall control or remote.

Important: If this was due to an obstruction preventing the garage door from closing, make sure the obstruction is cleared so the garage door can close.
