What is an Image Sensor?

The Image Sensor is a PIR motion detector with a built-in camera. The sensor is designed to take motion-activated images to provide additional information for alarm events, disarms, and other events of interest. The Image Sensor can be configured to capture images unrelated to security events (alarms) to allow you to capture events that are important to you, but may not require a response from emergency services.

While Image Sensors may look similar, each panel requires a specific model of Image Sensor. For more information about Image Sensor compatibility, see Image Sensor - Hardware compatibility.

How an Image Sensor works

When the Image Sensor PIR detects motion, the Image Sensor captures images based on the custom configurations as well as the default settings that are pre-loaded into the user's sensor. When images are captured on the sensor, they are stored locally on the sensor until the user requests them. Some images, such as those tied to an alarm event, are automatically uploaded. Once uploaded, images are available for viewing on the Alarm.com customer website or Alarm.com app.

Note: During alarm events, Image Sensors only captures images when it detects motion. Up to five Image Sensor images are automatically uploaded per alarm event, and then any additional captures are available for manual upload in the Images past events page.
