What are the differences between the Alarm.com Skill and the Smart Home Skill for Amazon Alexa?

Amazon Alexa can connect with Alarm.com using either the Alarm.com skill or the Alarm.com Smart Home skill. The following outlines the differences between the two skills.

Alarm.com skill

Interaction with Amazon Alexa 

The Alarm.com skill requires you to talk to Alarm.com through Alexa and must contain the command to "Ask/tell Alarm.com".

Example: "Alexa, ask Alarm.com to turn on the living room light."

Currently, the Alarm.com skill with Amazon Alexa supports commands for:

  • Scenes
  • Lights
  • Thermostats
  • Locks
  • Garage doors
  • Video cameras
  • Security systems (arming/disarming)

Interaction with Amazon Alexa

The Alarm.com Smart Home skill uses Amazon Alexa’s Smart Home API, which connects your Alarm.com devices directly into the Amazon Alexa. This allows you to interact with your Alarm.com devices directly through Amazon Alexa.

Example: "Alexa, turn on the living room light."
