What is the range of Z-Wave?

Z-Wave is a low-power protocol, which lets devices run on batteries for years at a time while communicating relatively complicated information. To do this, it transmits at reduced power, but its signal can more easily be blocked. Without any obstructions, a single Z-Wave device's range is advertised as 100 feet in open-air.

However, as shown in the chart below, different materials cause different signal strength dropoffs. 

Example: If a customer has a decorative brick wall, it may be worthwhile to avoid a direct connection through it and install in-wall light switches on either side. Likewise, be on the lookout for refrigerators, filing cabinets, cars, and other large, metal fixtures!

To overcome the fairly short range of individual devices you can use additional AC-powered Z-Wave devices to relay signals to further away devices. You can use Link Quality tests to verify that devices are in range of the panel. For devices that can't communicate directly with the panel, we recommend having a "Good" link quality in addition to having two other AC-powered devices with a "Good" link quality as their neighbors.

Frequently asked questions

How many times can a signal be repeated on a Z-Wave network?

A signal is able to hop through nodes up to four times. This means a command could hop using three devices between the panel/module and the receiving device, allowing for an overall open-air range potential of 600 feet per Sigma Designs.

Note: This does not mean that if there are four devices between the panel and its destination, it will not make it, however. A message will try to take the most efficient route (fewest hops) possible.

What can decrease Z-Wave signal range?

Several environmental factors, including physical barriers like walls, floors, and large appliances like refrigerators or washing machines, as well as a device being contained in a J-Box, can significantly reduce the maximum communication range or even block communication between nodes. A device in a metal J-Box could be expected to lose 20% of its usual signal range and a single wall could be expected to reduce signal range from 30-40%.

What is the Z-Wave signal range in a normal residence?

It has been found through troubleshooting experience that a realistic range potential in a typical residence to be close to 30 feet. It is always important to understand that the environment the Z-Wave network is in can significantly affect the communication range and that it may be necessary to make adjustments to the Z-Wave network.

Troubleshooting

To verify if range issues are causing the undesired behavior (e.g., malfunctioning device or device failing to respond to commands): 

  • Assess the environment to determine Z-Wave network layout and what could be decreasing the Z-Wave network's communication range.
