How does Alarm.com utilize third-party cameras streams?

Alarm.com utilizes either two or three streams from a third-party video camera.

Dual-stream configuration

When utilizing a dual-stream third-party camera (i.e., a camera with only two streams configured, even if the camera can support more than two streams), Alarm.com will designate the stream with the highest resolution as the “High Stream” and the stream with the lowest resolution as the “Low Stream.”

The High Stream is used for periods of motion in the SVR Timeline and HD Live View from the customer interfaces.

The Low Stream is used for periods of inactivity in the SVR Timeline and SD (standard definition) Live View from the customer interfaces.

Tri-stream configuration

When using a tri-stream third-party camera (i.e., a camera with three or more streams configured), Alarm.com will designate the stream with the highest overall quality stream settings as the “High Stream” and the stream with the lowest quality settings as the “Low Stream.”

The High Stream will be used for periods of motion in the SVR Timeline.

The Low Stream will be used for periods of inactivity in the SVR Timeline and SD (standard definition) Live View from the customer interfaces.

The “Medium Stream” will be disabled by default, so if you want to use a third stream, you must log in to the Alarm.com customer website to select and configure a “Medium Stream.”

  • If the Medium Stream is disabled, the High and Low Stream usage will mirror the dual-stream configuration.
  • If the Medium Stream is enabled, it will be used for HD Live View from the customer interfaces.
