Connect a video device to a hidden wireless network

Alarm.com video devices are able to connect to a hidden Wi-Fi network by using manual configuration options. Hidden networks may also be referred to as a network that is not broadcasting. The method to connect to a hidden network depends on the video device being connected:

Important: When attempting to manually connect to a wireless network, it is necessary to type in all information about the network. Accuracy is crucial, so it is advisable to confirm the network information is correct. If uncertain, confirm with the person who set up the network.

Manually configure a video device's wireless network

Use this method when the video device is already installed on the account and connected with an Ethernet cable.

  1. Log in to the Alarm.com customer website.
  2. Click Video.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Select the desired video device.
  5. Click Network.
  6. Click Change Network.
  7. Click Manual.
  8. In the Wireless Network Name (SSID) field, enter the Wi-Fi name. This is case-sensitive.
  9. Using the Encryption Type dropdown menu. select the encryption type.
  10. Using the Algorithm dropdown menu, select the encryption algorithm.
  11. In the Password field, enter the Wi-Fi password. This is case-sensitive.
    • If you want these settings to apply to all wireless cameras on the account, click Advanced. Then click to select Apply these settings to all wireless cameras on this account
  12. Click Continue.
  13. After the correct information is saved in these fields, remove the power cable from the camera, then remove the Ethernet cable.
  14. Reconnect the power cable and wait for the status LED to turn solid green.

Note: All cameras that do not have an Ethernet cable option have the Access Point (AP) mode option for connecting the camera to the wireless network. 

This method applies to Alarm.com cameras that have the AP mode option. If the camera does not have an Ethernet cable option, it will have the AP mode option.  For specific camera specifications, find the camera's data sheet in Video Devices.

  1. Verify the camera is in AP mode. A blinking white LED indicates AP mode. 
    • If the camera is not blinking white: 
      1. Press and hold the WPS button on the camera for 5 to 7 seconds. The camera LED will first blink blue before blinking white. 
      2. Release the button immediately after the LED begins to blink white. 
  2. From a computer, smartphone, or tablet, connect to the Wi-Fi network ALARM (##:##:##). The numbers in parentheses are the last six digits of the camera’s MAC address.
  3. Using a web browser on the device connected to the ALARM Wi-Fi network, type in the web address for the video device being connected (e.g., http://v723install or http://522irinstall) or 192.168.1.1.
  4. Press Enter to go to the web address.
  5. After selecting a language, manually enter the Wi-Fi information: 
    1. In the SSID field, enter the name of the wireless network. This is case-sensitive.
    2. Using the Security dropdown menu, select the encryption type (e.g., WPA, WPA2, WEP).
    3. Click to select the desired Key Format, which is the algorithm (i.e., AES or TKIP).
    4. In Security Key, enter the password for the wireless network. This is case-sensitive.

  6. Click Save.
  7. If the video device is not already installed on the customer's account, proceed to the Customer Website to install the video device.
