Shooter Detection Systems (SDS) - Mounting hardware
Frame, bracket, and box selection
The SDS Indoor PoE Gunshot Sensor has rear dimensions of 3.75 x 2.75 inches and a depth of 1 inch.
The depth does not include the cable bend radius requirements.
While the gunshot sensor was designed to fit within standard electrical boxes and low-voltage frames, not all manufacturers’ boxes provide a sufficient opening for the sensor.

A bracket, frame, or box must be selected to allow for a large enough opening for the length and width of the sensor. When selecting a box, sufficient space for the sensor depth, an RJ45 connector (boot, if used), and proper cable bend radius, must be considered. In most installations, a minimum box depth of 2.5 inches will be required.
Most dual-gang plates (mud ring) attached to a 4x4 junction box will not offer enough clearance (LxW) for the sensor. Verify the mounting plate meets the minimum dimensions required prior to use.
When allowed by applicable law, and facility/customer requirements, Alarm.com strongly recommends the use of low-voltage frames/brackets. This allows the best fit and flexibility for cabling.
Cable considerations
Shooter Detection Systems recommends the use of CAT5 or CAT5e cabling. If desired, CAT6 cable may also be used. The length should be measured to fit but no longer than 100 meters.
Important warranty note:
- The cable bend radius, and the pressure it exerts on the rear RJ45 connector, must be considered. Excessive force on the back of the unit will cause damage. In cases where a conduit is installed, additional care should be taken to ensure the cable is manually fed through the conduit and not forced back by the sensor. If the sensor becomes damaged due to undue force, the product warranty will be voided.
- Due to installation issues encountered when connecting CAT6A or CAT7 directly to the unit, it is not allowed. Failure to follow this requirement can result in damage to the sensor unit and will void the product warranty.
If CAT6A or CAT7 cabling is required by the customer then one of the following must be implemented:
- An appropriate CAT5/5e/6 patch cable must be provided between the sensor and the CAT6A/7. The transition to patch cable must be made outside of the electrical mounting box.
- The sensor must be mounted in a low voltage frame/bracket to eliminate the issues with CAT6A/7 bend radius. The cable must be supported and not hung from the back of the sensor unit.
Note: Utilize plenum-rated cable where required. Local Building Codes should be checked to verify the cable meets the code.
Mounting hardware compatibility
Alarm.com has verified the proper fit for the vendors and part numbers listed in this section. Mounting hardware which has been found to not fit properly has also been noted in separate tables.
Verified brackets, frames, box eliminator
Not all available mounting products have been verified. Check dimensions prior to using any mounting hardware. Incompatible products that are not wide enough should not be used.

Faceplate screws
The gunshot sensor is supplied with four faceplate screws which are packed in a small, clear plastic bag within the anti-static shipping bag.
If additional screws are needed, the Leviton part number 78000-PRT may be purchased. The description for this part number is: 1/2" Long, 6-32 Thread, Oval Head, Milled Slot, Light Almond
The faceplate screws should not be installed with a torque rating greater than 6 in-lbs.
Additional installation considerations
- Label each sensor - It is good practice (not an absolute requirement) to add a label with the SN (or IP address) on the face of the sensor so that the information will still be visible once installed.
