How does Z-Wave light status work?

If Z-Wave light status on the Alarm.com customer website and app does not appear to be updating immediately, it may be useful to understand how it works for different light devices.

Status types

Light devices that require periodic polling (delayed status)

The light status of many switches and dimmers updates based on a few different scenarios and criteria:

  • Light Status Monitoring works by immediately updating a light's status after a user sends a successful remote command.
  • Alarm.com will poll one light device every 15 seconds to determine if any local changes have taken place.
  • Each device is scanned one after the other. Keep this in mind when looking for changes in status; the website and app should update within at most 2 and a half minutes (150 seconds) if a customer has the maximum of 10 light devices set up for status monitoring.
To enable/disable Z-Wave light status using the Alarm.com customer website:

Note: A maximum of 10 polling devices can display their light status. By default, light status is enabled for the first 10 light devices. Light status can be enabled or disabled for specific devices after more than 10 light devices are enrolled to the system.

  1. Log in to the Alarm.com customer website.
  2. In the Lights card, click Details.
  3. Click Configure for the light to be managed.
  4. Click the Show Light Status toggle switch.
  5. Click icn-close.svg.
Light devices that support proactive state reporting (real-time status)

When a Z-Wave light device is able to communicate its status to the controller immediately after being interacted with locally, its status on the Alarm.com customer website and app is updated right away. There is no limit to the number of light statuses that can display.

Lutron lights

Lutron light devices natively provide light status. There is no limit to the number of light statuses that can display.
