How do I install a Home Energy Meter?

There are two major parts to add a Home Energy Meter (HEM) to an account, installation of the meter into the panel's Z-Wave network and the installation of the physical device in the user's AC mains electricity box.

Caution: Only a licensed electrician should install the meter into a circuit box.

To install the HEM into a circuit box:

  1. Turn the main breaker off.
  2. Open the main circuit box panel.
  3. Clip each clamp of the meter around the incoming electricity cable that connects to the main circuit breaker.

Important: HEM G2 has directionality on the clamps. Please make sure that the direction of the current is going from K to L on both clamps. Both clamps need to be consistent in the direction of the current (from K to L).

  4. Connect the clamps to the meter using clamp connectors.
  5. Connect the AC wire to the meter using the AC wire connector.
  6. Wire the AC wire into one breaker. The brown wire is Live, the blue wire is neutral.
  7. Replace the main circuit box panel.
  8. Turn the main breaker back on.

Next, the HEM needs to be placed. If the circuit box is made of metal, the radio signal may be reduced. Placement outside of the circuit box is recommended.

To place the HEM:

  1. Unslot the backing plate from the back of your meter.
  2. Affix the plate to the selected wall space using the provided screws.
  3. Attach your meter to the backing plate.

Finally, link the HEM to the panel's Z-Wave network by putting the panel into Add Mode and pressing the Home Energy Meter button. Once the HEM is successfully linked, the light will remain solid for 3 seconds.
